Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring content so generative AI tools — ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity — cite your business in the answers they write, rather than only sending a link for someone to click.
This guide goes deep on GEO specifically. For how it relates to SEO and AEO side by side, see SEO vs AEO vs GEO.
How GEO differs from traditional SEO
SEO optimises for a ranked list of links a person clicks through. GEO optimises for a citation inside a generated answer — the AI has already read and summarised several sources, and the goal is being one of them. A page can rank well on Google and still never get cited by an AI engine if it is not structured for extraction.
Why GEO matters in 2026
73% of B2B software buyers now use an AI assistant during vendor research, according to Arete — meaning a growing share of your buyers may never see a traditional search results page at all. More broadly, 68% of online experiences now begin with a search engine or an AI assistant, which makes being discoverable to both non-negotiable.
If an AI assistant answers the buyer’s question before they reach your website, ranking #1 below that answer does not help you.
GEO tactics that actually move the needle
- Write in question-and-answer structure. Content structured this way sees a 4.1x higher rate of appearing in AI overviews than standard keyword-first pages.
- Add a short answer capsule after every H2. 72.4% of posts cited by ChatGPT include a 30–60 word, self-contained answer directly after each subheading.
- Build entity presence beyond your own site. Mentions on review platforms and community sites correlate with AI citation at 0.664, compared with just 0.218 for raw backlink counts, per 100 Signals — being talked about elsewhere matters more than being linked to.
- Use structured data. Organization, Service, and FAQPage schema help AI crawlers understand what your page is actually saying, not just what it ranks for.
- Make sure pages render without JavaScript. Most AI crawlers do not execute JS, so content that only appears after a script runs is invisible to them.
How to measure GEO
GEO is newer than SEO, so measurement is less standardised. In practice, track it by periodically asking the AI tools your buyers use the questions they would ask, and noting whether — and how — your business is cited. Pair that with the same fundamentals that support GEO indirectly: organic traffic and time-on-page, since 53% of trackable website traffic still comes from organic search.
